Campaign Responses

Paul in Parliament

Every day, I receive dozens of campaign emails from constituents concerned about a huge variety of national issues. While individual constituency enquiries will be answered by email or letter, due to the vast increase in the volume of standard campaign emails now being generated, I can no longer guarantee replying to these individually. I will therefore post my response to these standard campaigns on this section of my website so constituents are aware of my views on the issue.

Alcohol Duty

The Autumn Budget 2021 confirmed that duty rates on beer, cider, wine and spirits will be frozen for another year, a move which will save consumers £3 billion over the next five years, and provide further support to the hospitality industry and its suppliers as they recover from the pandemic.

Statement on Downing Street Parties

I know many constituents have contacted me about the recent revelations regarding events in Downing Street.

First and foremost, I want to make it clear that I have not attended any parties in Downing Street myself.

Statement on Plan B measures

As you are aware, in light of the increased threat of the Omicron variant, the Government has decided to enact the ‘Plan B’  measures set out in the summer and designed to prevent the NHS being overwhelmed.

Statement on Owen Paterson

There has rightfully been a lot of interest in the Owen Paterson case and the broader conduct of MPs in relation to outside earnings and second jobs.

Bovine Tuberculosis

Bovine tuberculosis threatens our cattle industry and presents a risk to other livestock, wildlife, pets and humans.

Health and Care Bill

As we build back better from this pandemic, it is right and necessary that our health and care services are at the forefront. The pandemic underlined not only the dedication and skill of those in this sector, but also the necessity of a broader, more integrated health and care system.

Cancer Treatment

The NHS is open for business and anyone who needs care and treatment should continue to access it as and when they need it, especially when delays could impose both an immediate and a long-term risk to health.

Sea Blasts

I believe we should do all we can to protect the welfare of our marine life, especially the whale, and from my conversations with ministerial colleagues I know they feel the same.

Peat

Peatlands are our biggest terrestrial carbon store and home to some of our rarest species. Healthy peatlands can help us adapt to the effects of climate change and restored upland peatland can reduce the risk of flooding.

Teacher's Pay

Teachers have a huge impact on children’s futures and so I want all our children to be taught by the brightest and the best.

Sewage Overflows

I am glad that this is the first Government to set out expectations that water companies must take steps to significantly reduce storm overflows. This instruction will now be put on an enhanced legal footing.

Protecting Pollinators

Pollinators are an essential part of our environment and play a crucial role in food production through pollination.
